One of the aims and objectives of our guild is to "participate in community projects". Our members make quilts and other items to donate to the community.
This page will contain activities our members can join to contribute to the community outreach program, as well as a sampling of some of the items that have been recently made.
Placemat Challenge for Community Care Durham
We were recently contacted by Community Care in Whitby that they have run out of placemats for their Meals on Wheels program. Before you know it, it will be that time of the year where they like to send out meals with festive placemats to cheer up their clients.
Of course, we want to help them to meet their goal of 150 placemats. WE have over 100 members and if each member made 2 or 4 placemats, well you see where I’m going with this? I’m sure we can easily meet that need. Ideally, we would like to provide them to multiple Durham Region Meals on Wheels program locations. Let’s brighten some seniors days this fall.
What are we looking for?
· They must be made by members of the guild (no store bought or Value Village please)
· Size of placemats is 12 x 16 or slightly larger, festive on one side and everyday on the other side.
· They must be 3 layers (batting in the middle) and quilted and bound. Sew and flip is fine too!
· Stuck for ideas? Check out Pinterest for some great photos www.pinterest.com, just search for meals on wheels placemats, there are TONS OF IDEAS THERE. We probably all have a few strips of fabric hanging around that you could use for quilt as you go. These make easy, quick placemats and are a good opportunity to practice your binding techniques. I like to machine bind because they will be washed and loved by their clients. Hand bound is wonderful as well. Don’t forget that some of the clients are men!
· If you have guild labels, please attach them on the edge (need a label or 4? Call Kate H.)
· Completed placemats can be brought to the September and October meetings at the latest
· Prizes? We will come up with something!
We have Zoom sew days coming up and the Community Outreach team will be joining from time to time to keep you motivated.
Happy Sewing
